The Realest Talk — 03 January 2012
New Year, Newer Mind

So here we are in the year 2012.  Everyone goes through the typical partying, celebrating, and new year’s resolutions.  I’m sure you would agree that all of these actions typically are forgotten before the end of January.   What’s the use of a new year and resolutions if you are not going to follow through with your plans?  Regardless what year we’re in, this should never dictate what goals you have for yourself.  A new year is not really “starting over”, per se.  We all still have the same bills, same job, same problems that we did in 2011.  So the notion of a new year is nothing close to a clean slate.

With this in mind, it’s up to each one of us to push toward accomplishing our goals this very moment.  I hear these sayings all the time from people:  “I’m about to…” or “get ready for me to…”  when they talk about their goals.  This is just a cover-up for fear, apprehension, or denial in your abilities.  You shouldn’t care about what you haven’t yet accomplished.  Instead, recognize what you have ALREADY done, which has taken you one-step further towards your goals.  If you believe you can achieve better, then you will achieve better…given you take the proper actions to do so.

One of the most common resolutions I hear for the new year is to exercise or eat healthier.  It’s funny how we always have something like this in back of our minds to improve on, but we fail to actually make the change.  If you keep focusing a resolution year after year, 20 years will have gone by and you’re still trying to “do better”.  It’s a vicious cycle we all need to learn how to break NOW, not later.  If you make sure to have positive people in your circle who can motivate you, then your goals should be a bit easier to accomplish.

So for 2012, my suggestion to you is erase the “2-0-1-2″ from your mind and focus on the here and now.  No one is going to accomplish your goals for you, or “save you” from your current situation.  There’s ALWAYS room for improvement, and it ALWAYS begins with self.

Happy New “Mind”…
