Uncommon Sense

“Common Sense is not so common” – Voltaire

This is one of the most accurate quotes of all time. I’m sure when you take a look at what goes on around you in everyday life, you’ll notice something that is so ridiculously backwards that you simply can’t believe your own two eyes. Our everyday activities are plagued with stupidity, and it doesn’t look like it’s going away any time soon.

Common Sense is one of the simplest concepts known to man. I believe everyone possesses it, although it doesn’t seem that way most of the time. Common Sense is as simple as one plus one equaling two…But the problem is a lot of people continue to experiment with how to make one and one equal thirty-seven.

We don’t like boring.  And that’s exactly what common sense is…nothing spectacular, fresh, or flashy.  So we try bring new life to common sense by way of some of the most idiotic actions ever.  It’s sad really…Because I think if we focused more on this simple concept, we wouldn’t have so much nonsense in the world.  Do you ever wonder why many people (especially younger people) commit dumb crimes or act in a thoughtless way?  Well, kids may not use common sense because they haven’t yet been told the importance of it from adults in their life.  But if the adults around them don’t use common sense themselves, then of course the kids won’t learn a thing.  I had written a previous post about the state of parenting nowadays, and I think poor parenting and not using common sense go hand in hand.

Any time I’m in a detailed conversation with someone, 99% of the logic behind my opinion is based on common sense.  The concept of Knowledge of Self heavily relies on this.  You don’t have to have a doctorate degree to understand or master the concept.  All you need to do is make sense of what you see around you that isn’t man-made.   For example, the human body is made up primarily of water.  So it makes sense for us to consume water in order to live.  But on the flip side, if you jump in the ocean and stay underwater, your body will consume too much water and you’ll eventually drown.  So it makes sense to understand how much water keeps you alive, and how much can kill you.  If you can’t swim, don’t jump in the ocean without a life jacket…common sense, right?  So to me, common sense is more of a cautionary thought process that should help make the world around you easier to understand.

For those that use their common sense daily, the worst you could ever do is look down upon someone that may not be on the same page as you with their actions.  The barrier between people learning from each other can be a little easier to break when common sense is used as support for the knowledge you’re trying to share.  As I had mentioned earlier, I believe everyone possesses common sense.  So it’s the best tool to use when trying to steer someone in a more positive direction.  How do you use common sense in your own life?  Leave your thoughts in the comments!

Strive to make common sense more common!!!

Great article. Voltaire is one of my favorite quotable figures in world history.

Common sense can sometimes be the hardest thing for people to grasp, which I guess makes life fun and interesting (and sometimes annoying).

True indeed.  It’s one facet of life I hope will be seen as the norm from the majority.  We ALL have a lot of work to do!

I cant stand stupid ppl and I know that! lol So I keep my comments to my self …I Guess that would be knowledge of self. But at the same time instead of making it someting I cant stand about ppl I should make it my duty to educate them in the things I think I can help them with, that I understand better than they do ….Good Post flo I see where you going with it!

Yessir!  The sad part about it is they may not even realize how stupid their actions are.  It might take you to tell them (tactfully) to make them open their eyes!
