Knowledge Of Self — 04 December 2011
Know Thy Self

When I was a little kid, I remember back at about 5 or 6 years old.  I used to ask myself “why am I here”…”what is my purpose”…”what is my place in the world”…”what IS this world”???  Questions that I’m sure other kids have probably asked just for the sake of their curiosity.  But when I asked these questions to myself, I slowly began to understand that life is full of choices, obstacles, good, evil, clarity and confusion.  And since 5 years old, I’ve always wanted to have clarity in my life.

Dealing with the obstacles of growing up in a lower income environment, seeing a lot of heartache, pain, and problems, I always thought to myself that this shouldn’t “have to be this way for people.  By the time I turned 10, this was the era of hip hop and afrocentricity.  So at that time, it was actually cool to know history beyond what they taught in school.  This is one of many reasons why I have a strong love for hip hop…because a lot of the questions I had as a toddler were also being asked in hip hop kulture.  I couldn’t imagine my life without support for my thoughts and questions which were outside of the “norm” in my eyes.

Once you embrace those ideas you have that are coming from your own mind, you are already moving in the direction of understanding who you are as a person and having Knowledge of Self (KoS).  Life is so much more than just going to school, graduating, and getting a job for the next 35 years, then die.  There is an infinite amount of knowledge out there that you could embrace to better this world we live in.  Being a black man, I KNOW there is so much history out there for me to further understand the greatness of my people.  I hope as I further develop my website, that we all understand that we ALL can learn from each other in some form or fashion.  This is why I truly believe why we are on this planet together.  When children are starving and dying the same day they are born, there is something terribly wrong with that.  It will take each one of us to take a look at OURSELVES to understand the power we hold within to help each other and change the world for the better.

My advice to you is simply ask yourself “who are you?”  What do you want to achieve in this world?  Is it based on selfish notions, or is it at least moving in the direction of helping someone else, in addition to yourself.  Whether it’s wise words, a newly formed business, art…your passion should resonate in a way that influences your fellow man in a positive way.  When you think about the value of someone ELSE’S life, you ultimately value your OWN life.

peace.
